Lightning Strikes Spark Five Fires in Corolla, Adventure Golf Closed
Corolla, NC – June 17, 2025 — A series of intense thunderstorms rolled through the Outer Banks on Monday night, with lightning strikes igniting at least five separate fires in the Corolla area, according to emergency officials. Among the affected locations was the popular Corolla Adventure Golf & Bumper Cars, which has been temporarily closed due to fire damage.
Fire crews responded to multiple calls starting around 9:45 p.m. as heavy lightning lit up the sky across Currituck County. One of the first reports came from a nearby residential neighborhood, followed closely by calls from commercial areas along Route 12. Officials say all fires were caused directly by lightning strikes and were spread out over a three-mile radius.
Corolla Adventure Golf sustained damage to part of its main building and landscaping features after a bolt of lightning reportedly struck a palm tree near the course’s central structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and staff members had already left for the evening before the storm intensified.
“Crews worked through the night to contain and extinguish all fires,” said Currituck County Fire Marshal Jason Hill. “We’re grateful no one was hurt, but it serves as a strong reminder of how dangerous summer storms can be.”
As of Tuesday morning, all five fires have been extinguished. Damage assessments are still underway, but initial estimates suggest tens of thousands of dollars in structural and landscaping losses.
Corolla Adventure Golf announced via social media that it will remain closed for repairs until further notice. Visitors with upcoming reservations are encouraged to check the business’s website or call ahead for updates.
Local authorities urge residents and tourists to remain alert this week, as more storms are forecast for the region.
