BREAKING NEWS: Not from Los Angeles, Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers will earn over $100 million in 2025.
Last offseason,
Shohei Ohtani inked a massive 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It’s safe to say that the massive contract is paying off after he won his third MVP award,
became the first player to hit 50 or more home runs and steal 50 or more bases,
and helped the team win their eighth World Series.
This is especially true considering that all but $2 million of Ohtani’s annual salary is deferred for him to receive at a later time.
Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico recently reported that the two-way star is expected to make over $100 million this season,
even though the Dodgers owe him $2 million. Global sports legends like Stephen Curry,
Rober Federer,
and Tiger Woods have only ever been able
to match his estimated $100 million in off-the-diamond endorsements,
according to Badenhausen. Given that Ohtani will only turn 31 in July,
it is reasonable to assume that this will not be the only occasion the three-time MVP reaches this milestone.
Since Ohtani expanded his endorsement portfolio to include six additional brands,
bringing his total number of brand partners to 20, it is evident that the delayed deal has no bearing on his yearly earnings.
Among Ohtani’s significant partners are New Balance,
Beats,
Fanatics/Topps,
and most recently,
Epic Games.
Nez Balelo,
Ohtani’s agent,
told Badenhausen how the superstar’s management helps him land these big deals.
“We have a very strategic and cautious game plan for Shohei,”
Balelo stated. “It’s critical to align with all of the brands we collaborate with regarding their use of Shohei in their campaigns.”
Ohtani uses his global fame to promote Japanese products like Ito En,
Kowa,
Kose Cosmetics,
and Seiko watches, so the brands don’t just exist in North America.
Ohtani’s international reputation was enhanced by moving to the L.A. baseball team with more titles, and while winning a championship in his debut season may have cemented it,
the already priceless influence he has will only increase as he looks to return to the mound later this season.
